How to Get Glue Out From a Mylar Glass Window

Mylar film is applied to windows to increase their tensile strength. In home applications, layers of Mylar are attached to windows to help them stand up to debris thrown around in storms. If the Mylar is damaged, compromised or just no longer desirable, you'll have to get the glue out to peel the film away without harming the window. The only way to get the glue out of the Mylar film is to dissolve the film to get to the adhesive backing behind it. That's easy to do with ammonia.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a spray bottle with ammonia.

    • 2

Coat the Mylar film with the ammonia via the spray bottle.

    • 3

Place plastic wrap over the treated portion of the window and secure it with painter's tape. Leave the plastic wrap in place for 30 minutes.

    • 4

Remove the plastic wrap, and scrape off the Mylar film and glue with a wide plastic putty knife.

    • 5

Repeat steps two through four again if necessary to remove any stubborn Mylar film glue.

    • 6

Clean away all ammonia and vinegar residue with soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge.

    • 7

Rinse the window free of any soap residue with a clean sponge and fresh water. Rinse frequently and keep wiping until all of the soap residue is gone.
