How to Keep the Screen Door From Blowing Open

A screen door that is not securely held into the frame is more susceptible to being blown open. The constant opening and closing of the door is often annoying. You can fix this problem by tightening the latch or installing a wind safety chain. The latch pulls the screen door into the frame and holds it securely in place. A wind safety chain also prevents the wind from blowing the door open.

  • Electric drill

Instructions

    • 1

Place the header bracket of a wind chain on the head jamb. The header bracket is the portion of the wind chain that connects to the spring. The bracket should be 1 1/2 inches back from the front of the jamb, and 18 inches from the hinge side of the door frame.

    • 2

Mark screw holes in the bracket with a pencil. Remove the bracket, and use an electric drill with a 1/8-inch bit to drill 3/8-inch pilot holes where the marks are.

    • 3

Screw the header bracket into place with the included screws or two 10 x 3/4-inch screws.

    • 4

Secure the door bracket on the inside of the storm door with the included screws or two 12 x 5/8-inch round screws. The door bracket has the chain connected to it. Move the bracket down 1 1/2 inch from the top edge of the door, and 19 inches from the hinge edge of the door.

    • 5

Close the screen door, then thread one end of the spring into the last link on the chain. Attach the hold spring to the head jamb with a double-headed nail.

    • 6

Open the screen door, and find the latch located on the inside of the door frame.

    • 7

Tighten the screws in the latch with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 8

Close the screen door, and verify that the latch now pulls the door in and holds it securely in place.
