How to Fix a Hydraulic Screen Door Closer

Sometimes a screen door closer does not operate as it should. The door may take forever to close — letting all the flies in — or it may close with a bang. A screen door closer consists of a hydraulic cylinder attached to the door, which controls a rod attached to the door jamb. A change of season may have an effect on the closer, requiring adjustment. A change in the weight of the door — such as when removing the screen and installing a storm window — may also have an effect on how the door closes.

Instructions

  1. Pre-Load

    • 1

Open the screen door. Grasp the rod that comes out of the closer. Move it in the direction needed to take the pressure off the pin that holds the rod into the metal bracket screwed to the door jamb.

    • 2

Pull the pin out of the rod and the metal bracket. Place the pin aside. Allow the rod to retract into the cylinder.

    • 3

Pull the rod out of the cylinder slightly. Push the hold-open washer on the rod to keep the rod out of the cylinder at the lug located near the pin mounting hole.

    • 4

Move the door as needed so the hole in the end of the rod lines up with the hole in the metal bracket. Do not pull the rod out of the cylinder to line up the holes or you will have to repeat the process.

    • 5

Insert the pin through the holes in the metal bracket and the rod. Release the door. Slide the hold-open washer toward the metal bracket so the door will fully close.

    Closing Speed

    • 6

Locate the closing speed adjustment screw on the end of the door closer cylinder.

    • 7

Turn the screw with a Phillips screwdriver clockwise to lessen the speed of the door when closing.

    • 8

Turn the screw counterclockwise to hasten the door-closing speed.

    Latch Power

    • 9

Open the screen door approximately 8 inches. Slide the hold-open washer toward the cylinder to hold the door open at this position.

    • 10

Remove the pin from the bracket that holds the closer to the door.

    • 11

Line up the hole in the end of the closer with the farthest hole in the door bracket when the screen is installed in the door.

    • 12

Line up the hole in the end of the closer with the nearest hole in the door bracket when the storm window is installed.
