How to Measure for a Window Screen Awning

Accurate measurements for a window awning ensure that the size looks attractive on the exterior of your home. Whether the awning is fabric or some type of metal, it adds curb appeal, texture and color to the building. Awnings also help save on utility bills, particularly when they cover windows with southern or western exposures.

Instructions

    • 1

Check around the window frame to ensure there are no light fixtures or other obstructions near the area that may prevent the addition of the awning.

    • 2

Place the measuring tape across the width of the window. Measure the area from the outside edge of the window frame to the other outside edge. Add 12 inches to this measurement, and record the number. The extra foot allows the awning to block out sunlight along the sides of the window.

    • 3

Measure the distance from the bottom of the window frame to the top of the window frame to determine the height of the actual window. This allows you to install an awning that looks proportionate to the size of the window.

    • 4

Place one end of the measuring tape against the window and extend it outward to the desired length of the awning. This measurement determines the size of the support arm required to hold the awning.
