How to Fix a Sagging Door Hinge

A door frame’s most important job is to provide a secure mounting area to hang a door. Many doors, particularly front doors, are quite heavy. Over time and with repeated use, it is not uncommon for a hinge to start to pull out of the frame. As a result, the door will start to sag and eventually the door latch will not align with the strike plate. A damaged door frame can be replaced, but the process is complicated, and professional carpenters can be expensive. The alternative is to fill the stripped hinge hole with a dowel.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the door hinges from the door frame by removing the screws that secure the hinges to the frame with a screwdriver.

    • 2

Find a wooden dowel that matches the diameter of the screw holes within the door frame.

    • 3

Apply wood glue to the end of the dowel.

    • 4

Insert the tip of the dowel that is covered with glue into the screw hole. Then lightly tap the dowel into the frame.

    • 5

Cut away the excess portion of the dowel with a utility knife. The goal here is to trim the excess dowel until the remaining portion is flush with the door frame.

    • 6

Drill a small hole into the center of the dowel to accommodate the hinge screw.

    • 7

Position the door hinges against the frame and tighten the hinge screws into the dowel.
