How to Adjust Bi-Fold Doors

Bi-fold doors that don't glide smoothly are frustrating, but most often they are just in need of an adjustment. Bi-fold doors are installed on tracks connected to the door through pivots. A loosened pivot allows the door to slip out of the track or slip sideways, while a tight pivot prevents the door from moving easily. Adjusting the pivots is usually all you need do to make the doors work correctly.

Instructions

Open the door and check that the pivots are seated in the track. If they are not, on most bi-fold doors you simply lift the door and push the pivot back into the track. Some top pivots are spring-loaded, and pushing the spring down makes it easier to move either the top or bottom pivots back into the tracks.

Lift up the door and lift out the bottom pivot situated along the bottom of the door. Turn the bottom pivot so it is positioned to raise or lower the door. Set the bottom pivot back into the jamb when the height is properly adjusted.

Loosen the screw in the top pivot bracket with a screwdriver. Slide the pivot connection back and forth until you find the position where the door is plumb. Tighten the screw.

Turn the top pivots until the door is loose or tight enough that it glides easily along the track.
