How to Reduce the Door Latch Force of a Larson Storm Door

If walking through the entryway to your home is a race between the back of your ankles and the closing storm door, you'll want to adjust the closing-latch speed of the closure. Larson storm door closers offer a couple of different ways to adjust the closing speed. Reducing the door latch force of a Larson storm door is much the same as with any storm door closer. Take care when using the adjustment screw to prevent overtightening it and damaging the closer.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the screw on the end of the storm door closer one-quarter turn clockwise with a Phillips screwdriver. The adjustment screw is on the end of the closer that connects to the door bracket.

    • 2

Open the Larson storm door halfway and release the door. If the door is still closing too fast, adjust the screw another quarter turn. Do not adjust the screw more than a half-turn.

    • 3

Push the storm door open just enough to clear the latch. Pull the hold-open washer to the end of the closer to keep the door open.

    • 4

Hold the body of the closer with one hand and pull out the pin connecting the closer rod to the bracket with your free hand. The stem on the end of the closer has two holes. Reconnect the stem inside the door bracket, sliding the connecting pin through the bracket and the last hole on the stem.

Push the door slightly and pull the hold-open washer back to the end of the closer rod. The door should now operate correctly without closing too fast.
