How to Repair a Draft Around a Window Frame

Drafty windows do more than just make your home uncomfortable. If you do not repair the drafts, you could be paying more than you have to in energy bills. During the winter, cold weather comes in through the gaps, making your heater run more often. In the summer, the cool air inside your home flows out around a drafty window frame. With a quick fix, you can seal the gaps around a window and make your home more comfortable and energy efficient.

  • Sponge
  • Towel
  • Window caulk
  • Caulk gun

Instructions

    • 1

      Sponge off the frame on the outside of the window to remove dust and improve caulk adhesion. Dry the window frame with a towel.

      Place the tube of caulk in the caulk gun.

      Snip off the tip of the caulk tube with a pair of scissors.

      Squeeze a bead of caulk all around the window frame where the frame meets the exterior wall of the house.

      Repeat caulking where the window pane meets the inside of the window frame.

      Wipe any spilled caulk up with a damp sponge while the caulk is still wet.

      Let the caulk dry overnight.
