How to Install Natural Fiber Roll-Up Window Shades

Bamboo, hemp and flax are among the natural fibers used in many modern homes as material for roll-up window shades. Natural fibers are durable and resist discoloration and damage caused by ultraviolet light. These fibers originate from renewable resources and are recyclable and biodegradable. The natural look and feel of fiber roll-up window shades is a bonus for designers seeking an earth-friendly, naturally colored casual window treatment that works in any room.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the headrail up to the window to determine whether you will mount the natural fiber roll-up window shade inside the window frame or outside it. If it fits within the window frame, it can be mounted inside. If it is wider than the window frame, it must be mounted outside and slightly above the frame. Installing the brackets is the same, just the location differs.

    • 2

Hold one bracket on the top right inside part of the frame, about 1 inch from the right corner, for an inside mount. Outside mounting requires the bracket to be just above the right corner of the window, above the frame and any trim.

    • 3

Insert a screw into one of the bracket screw holes and turn it nearly all the way in. Repeat with the rest of the screws on the bracket to affix it to the window frame. Once you confirm that the bracket is exactly where you want it, tighten all the screws. Repeat with the bracket on the left side of the window frame.

    • 4

Hold the natural fiber window shade up to the brackets. Line up the threading posts on the brackets with the openings in the headrail. Attach the headrail to the brackets by screwing a wingnut onto each threading post. Depending on the manufacturer, the headrail may just snap into place without any other hardware. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Mount the cleat onto the wall on the right side of the window shade using two small screws. The cleat is the metal device that holds the excess cord when the shade is up.

    • 6

Pull the cord on the shade to ensure that it rolls up and down correctly. To lock the roll-up shade at a certain height, pull the cord to the side to engage the locking mechanism in the headrail. Tug at the cord to release the lock.
