How to Lubricate a Liftmaster Chain Driven Garage Door Opener

Over time, the chain on your Liftmaster garage door opener develops surface rust and begins to make noise as the opener operates the door. Although the surface rust does not harm the chain, sometimes a small amount of lubrication will resolve any squeaking or other noises. When lubricating the chain, it is necessary to use a lithium grease, which is available at home improvement centers. The lithium grease coats the chain adequately without caking and attracting dirt.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a step ladder on the chain side of the garage door opener rail. Some Liftmaster garage door openers have a full chain while others use a chain and cable combination. If you have a full chain, it is only necessary to lubricate on one side.

    • 2

Spray lithium grease along the door opener chain. Move the ladder toward the opener motor head, and spray a film of lithium grease around the bearing of the chain sprocket.

    • 3

Operate the Liftmaster garage door opener with the wall button or remote control. Open and close the door two times to evenly distribute the lithium grease.
