Leaking Aluminum Windows

Aluminum windows are in many homes because they are inexpensive and relatively durable. These windows do contain a seal in the frame, which prevents water from leaking inside. If your aluminum windows are experiencing leaking, the problem likely lies with this frame seal. There’s no need to call the handyman, because you can remove and replace a damaged seal on your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut into the seal between the glass and frame with a box cutter. Cut down the length of the seal.

    • 2

Use your fingers to peel off the sealant from the frame.

    • 3

Scrape the residual sealant off the frame with a putty knife.

    • 4

Put on gloves and safety goggles. Dip a rag into acetone. Thoroughly wipe the seal area of the frame. Clean the area again with a rag dipped in water. Dry the area with a clean rag.

    • 5

Mask the glass and borders of the frame with masking tape.

    • 6

Apply new ammonia-based or polyurethane sealer to the gap between the frame and the glass. These sealers usually come in a caulking gun or other dispenser. To apply, discharge a single line of sealer along the gap between the frame and glass. Allow the sealer to dry for the length of time recommended by the manufacturer.
