How to Install Window Insulation on Patio Doors

Sliding glass patio doors allow heat to escape and cold air to enter the home. The weatherstripping in the gaps around the door often compresses with use, which makes it less effective. Installing window insulation film around the doors creates an airtight seal and a pocket of air that traps heat indoors while keeping the cold out. Window insulation completely seals off the door but still allows light in, so only use it on patio doors you don't plan to open during the winter months.

Instructions

  Clean the interior frame around the patio door so the insulation tape adheres properly. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove all dust and dirt. Dry with a clean towel.

  Apply the double-sided tape to the entire patio door perimeter. Place the tape on the frame surrounding the door, not directly on the patio glass or glass frame.

  Measure the length and width of the patio door opening. Cut the window insulation film two to three inches larger than your measurement.

  Attach the plastic film to the double-sided tape. Begin adhering the plastic at the top and work down the sides to minimize wrinkles. Adhere the entire perimeter of the film to the tape so there are no gaps.

  Set the blow dryer on the high heat setting. Hold the dryer six inches from the film and move it over the surface of the plastic. The heat shrinks the insulation film and smooths out any wrinkles, creating an airtight seal.
