How to Fix Discoloration on Windows

Window glass is exposed to much abuse from the elements outside and dust and condensation on the inside. This exposure can cause the windows to discolor which can detract from the beauty of your home. Most discoloration is an accumulation of mineral deposits and other debris that glass cleaner can't clean. You can restore discolored windows with a moderate investment of time and effort. The correct procedure involves using the right solutions in the correct order.

Things You'll Need

  • Mineral spirits
  • Rag
  • Putty knife
  • Degreasant spray
  • Paper towel
  • Glass cleaner

      Apply a coating of mineral spirits to the affected glass using a rag. Rub the mineral spirits into the discolored areas.

      Scrape the tougher stains with a putty knife. Reapply the mineral spirits if it begins to dry off the window's surface. Dry the window glass with paper towels once the stains have been eradicated.

      Spray the window with a degreasant spray, and wipe it with a paper towel. Repeat the procedure to ensure that all the spray has been removed.

      Clean the window with a glass cleaner and paper towel. Spray the window with glass cleaner again, and wipe it with a paper towel to ensure that none of the other solutions are left behind.
