Reason Why Vinyl Shades Won't Roll

Vinyl roller shades for your window allow you to switch effortlessly between a full view of the outside and instant privacy. Vinyl shades operate using a roller tube set into mounting brackets at the top of the window. The hollow tube has a spring in it that builds and reduces tension as you pull and release the shades. When your vinyl shades don't roll up at all, or just roll slowly, you can make adjustments to the spring to remedy the problem.
  1. Spring Tension Too Tight

    • If the roller shades roll up too quickly, the spring tension is too tight and needs to be loosened. To adjust it, lower the shade halfway, then remove it from the mounting brackets. Twist the roller in your hands so the loose vinyl wraps evenly around. When the shade is fully wrapped, re-hang it in the window. Test it several times to ensure it opens and closes at a proper speed.

    Spring Tension Too Loose

    • Too little tension in the spring can slow the roller shade down when it is released. To increase the speed at which the vinyl shades roll up, tighten the spring. When the shade is all the way up, remove it from the mounting brackets. Unroll it slowly and evenly, about halfway out. Put the shade back into the mounting brackets, then test it a few times.

    Uncoiled Spring

    • Sometimes the spring inside the roller can become completely uncoiled. When this happens, the shades will not roll up or down at all. To fix this, remove the shades from the mounting brackets. Turn the pin on the end of the roller a few times, using pliers. The tension in the spring will begin to build as you turn it. Replace the roller shades and test them a few times.

    Dust Buildup

    • Occasionally the spring mechanism in the metal tube gets too much dust inside it and doesn't operate smoothly. To blast air into the roller tube and clean it out, remove the end cap from the roller tube. Aim a blast of compressed air into the tube to loosen the grit. Replace the end cap and put the roller shades back on the mounting brackets. Check the shade a few times to make sure the problem is solved.
