How to Replace Edging Around a Garage Door Opening

Drafts around the perimeter of your garage door might require replacing the edging around the door. Edging, more commonly known as molding, serves two purposes. It acts as a stop for the door during installation; it also helps prevent rain and snow from seeping around the perimeter of the door. Replacement edging comes with a vinyl flap that helps overcome gaps due to the frame settling. Door edging is available through home improvement centers and garage door dealers. The popular vinyl variety requires no painting and also uses brad nails that are the same color as the edging.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the garage door fully, so you have access to the side of the edging that meets the closed garage door.

    • 2

Pry off the edging on the side jambs with a small pry bar. Work from the side of the edging that meets the garage door. This helps avoid damaging the paint and wood on the visible side of the jamb. Pry off the edging at the top of the door opening in the same manner.

    • 3

Pull out any trim nails that did not come off with the edging with a hammer. The side jambs and header must be free of nails. If a nail head is broken where it cannot be pulled out with a hammer, tap the remaining part of the nail into the wood until it is flush. Close the garage door.

    • 4

Measure the top of the opening from the left corner to the right corner with a tape measure. Transfer the measurement to the vinyl edging. Cut the edging to size with a hacksaw. Once you cut through the solid portion of the edging, cut the vinyl flap with a utility knife.

    • 5

Place the edging on the driveway in front of the garage with the outside of the edging facing up. Tap a brad nail into the center of the edging. Only drive the brad in with a hammer until begins to protrude through the other side of the edging. Drive a nail one inch from each end of the edging.

    • 6

Hold one end of the edging in the upper right corner of the garage door opening. The flap should bend slightly over the door. Tap the brad nail into the header halfway with a hammer. Slide your hand toward the center of the edging. Position it so the flap is evenly bent across the door. Tap the center brad nail into the header halfway.

    • 7

Position the left side end of the edging so the flap is even with right side. Tap the brad nail into the header fully. Tap the other nails fully into the header. Add nails along the length, spacing them 6 inches apart.

    • 8

Measure from the top edging to the bottom of the side jamb on each side. Cut and install the side pieces just as you did the top. The vinyl flap should be evenly bent over the door on all three pieces.

    • 9

Apply a bead of silicone caulk between the edging and the door opening frame with a caulk gun. If necessary, apply some caulk where the side pieces meet the top piece. Sometimes there is a small gap that the caulk hides.
