How to Fix Cracks in Plastic Doors

A crack in a plastic door may appear to be difficult to fix, because a plastic surface is too slippery for many adhesives. But you must fix the crack, because it could weaken the door. In addition, a crack looks unattractive and allows heat and sound to pass through it. Use a caulk or sealant designed for use on plastic to fill the crack. If you want an invisible repair, apply paint with an adhesion primer and interior- or exterior-grade paint after you fix the crack.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the door from its hinges, using a screwdriver. Start at the bottom hinge and work to the top. Set the hinges aside until you have finished the repair and are ready to reinstall the door. Lay the door flat on a work surface, with the crack side up.

    • 2

Clean the crack with a dry scrub brush to remove loose dirt. Use the upholstery attachment on a vacuum to pull out the loosened dust and dirt.

    • 3

Insert the caulk or sealant into the caulking gun. Cut off the tip of the caulk, using sharp scissors. Poke a hole in the nozzle with a nail to release the caulk.

    • 4

Insert the caulk nozzle into the top of the crack, and spread a thick line of caulk down the entire length of the crack.

    • 5

Wet your finger and wipe it along the caulk to smooth the surface. The water on your finger will keep the caulk from sticking to you. You can also wet a rag to smooth the surface.

    • 6

Allow the caulk to dry for eight hours or the length of time specified in the package instructions.
