How to Fix a Gap on the Top of an Exterior Door

When a door doesn't fit exactly within the doorframe, it can let heat or cool air escape from your home. When the gap is at the top of the door, it doesn't take much to fill the space and block air from moving past the door. Use adhesive foam weatherstripping tape to adhere to the door frame and fill the gap. Measure the space of the gap and choose a adhesive foam weatherstripping tape thick enough to fill it.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the top edge of the door, then cut the weatherstripping tape to match.

    • 2

Clean off the top of the door frame using all-purpose cleaner and a cloth. The weatherstripping tape will adhere best on a clean, dry surface.

    • 3

With the door closed, draw a light pencil line on the door frame right against the door.

    • 4

Peel the backing off the weatherstripping tape and stick it to the door frame so that it fits right up against the closed door.
