How to Seal a Front Door

Sealing your front door helps protect against air leaks that can raise your utility costs. By sealing the door, you prevent both cold and hot air from sneaking into your house when the door is closed. The easiest way to seal your door is by installing weatherstripping, which comes in several different forms. From metal to felt, weatherstripping helps keep energy costs down.

Measure along the top edge of your door frame with a tape measure and then along the side edges of your door frame. Mark down each measurement.

Cut your weather stripping to the measurements listed. Felt and adhesive weatherstripping is cut by using scissors. For weatherstripping that’s both metal and foam, cut the metal and foam parts separately. Pull the metal portion of the weatherstripping out so that it extends further than the foam, then cut the metal with a saw and the foam portion with scissors.

Staple felt weatherstripping to both the sides and top of the door frame. For adhesive weatherstripping, pull back the tape and stick the weatherstripping to the door frame. Metal weatherstripping requires you to drill a screw into the predrilled holes in the weatherstripping.

Install a door sweep for the bottom of the door. Measure the bottom width of the interior portion of the door. Use metal snips or a hacksaw to cut the door sweep to the necessary measurements. If you're using a self-adhesive door sweep, attach it to the bottom of the door, while allowing the bottom portion of the sweep to rest on the ground. If you're using a sweep that you must secure to the door with screws, press it against the bottom of the door and screw it into the door. Make sure the bottom of the sweep touches the ground.
