How to Make a Slamming Door Silent

Doors can often slam when people exert too much force or pressure on them. A slamming door will wake up sleeping babies, disrupt others in the home and even annoy your close neighbors. To reduce slamming, push the door closed by hand rather than allow it to close by itself. Outside of modifying your door-closing behavior, you can choose from a few other solutions.

Things You'll Need

  • Door closer
  • Velcro strips

Install a door closer on the slamming door. The door closer prevents the door from closely too quickly or strongly, and is available for residential and commercial doors. The closer slows the speed at which the door closes, resulting in a softer, more muffled close. Closers also come with a mechanism that allows you to prop and keep the door open when desired. To install the closer, screw the body of the closer to the frame above the door and the arm of the closer to the top of the door on the hinge side.

Add Velcro strips over the strike plate. The strike plate is the metal plate in the door jamb. As the latch passes over the jamb, the Velcro strips will slow down and quiet the closing door before the door jamb receives the latch. These strips are available at home improvement stores, but you can also create them. To do so, cut four strips of Velcro fabric. Glue or tape each piece to the top, bottom and sides of the strike plate. Be sure not to cover the latch hole in the plate.

Reduce air currents in the room by closing all windows and any doors. When the window is open, currents increase the pressure on the door. This pressure pushes on the door as it closes, resulting in a loud slam. Close any nearby windows and doors that might encourage a draft. Air currents caused by household fans and air conditioners are typically not strong enough to put pressure on the door, but some swamp coolers can create this kind of pressure.
