How to Seal Around Glass Block Basement Windows

Glass block windows are a common choice for basements and bathrooms since they allow light into the space while making it difficult to see into the room from the outside. These windows keep warm air from escaping during the winter months, helping to keep down heating bills. However, like regular windows, glass block ones must be sealed on both the inside and the outside with weatherproof silicone caulk to keep their insulating properties in top shape.

Instructions

Put on work gloves. Grip the putty knife so the blade is perpendicular to the seam between the window and the wall. Push the blade into the existing caulk at a 30-degree angles and move it downward to loosen the caulk. Continue until all of the existing caulk has been removed.

    • 2

Insert the silicone caulk into the caulk gun following the instructions on the package. Hold the caulk gun so it is perpendicular to the seam where the old caulk was applied. Evenly press down on the handle to apply a thin bead of caulk between the window and the wall. Continue until the entire window has been caulked.

Hold the plastic spoon so its rounded convex end is against the freshly applied caulk. Gently run it along the caulk to flatten it out and further seal the window. Allow the caulk to dry for 24 hours.
