How to Determine the Hinge Side on a Casement Window

Casement windows are hinged windows that open outward. They are seated in a window frame that allows hinges to be mounted on the insides of the frame. Unlike traditional windows that open vertically, casement windows open straight out like a door. A turning handle rotates and opens the window. During installation it is important to correctly identify the hinge sides of the windows.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the window panel in your hands or lean against a wall for easier viewing.

    • 2

Inspect the bottom edges around the casement window. Some models have the turning handle built in on the inside side of the window. If you do not see a handle, proceed to Step 3.

    • 3

Inspect the edges of the casement window frame just below the window glass. Look for screw holes or a mounting plate for the turning handle. This marks the inside of the window. For the left window, this means the hinge side is on the left. For the right window, the hinge side is on the right. Determine left and right while viewing the window from inside the home.
