How to Fix Craftsman Noisy Garage Door Openers

The Craftsman name can be found on many items used in the home, such as power tools, lawn and yard equipment and garage door openers. Craftsman garage door openers are sold by Sears stores. The opener raises or lowers you garage door by way of an electric motor connected to a chain drive. Often mounted to the garage ceiling, the opener may generate noise and vibration from operation that can intrude into the living space of your home. Installation of a vibration isolation kit on your Craftsman opener should quiet things down.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the garage door. Place a ladder under the garage door opener housing. Unplug the opener power cord from the outlet. Note which hole in the ceiling mounting brackets that the garage door is bolted to.

    • 2

Loosen the nuts and bolts that attach the top of the garage door opener to the ceiling mounting brackets with a wrench. Use a second wrench to keep the bolt head from turning while loosening the nut, if necessary.

    • 3

Have an assistant push up slightly on the underside of the door opener to take the pressure off the mounting bolts. Remove the nuts, washers and bolts from the opener and the ceiling bracket. Lower the opener so its underside is resting on the top of the ladder. Save the nuts and washers for reuse. Discard the bolts or save them for another project.

    • 4

Insert the threaded end of one of the rubber isolators from a vibration isolation kit into the mounting hole in one of the ceiling brackets that the opener was attached to. Ensure the isolator is placed on the same side of the bracket that the opener was attached to. Place a lock washer over the threads of the isolator. Thread a nut over the threads and tighten it with a wrench. Install the remaining isolator in the correct mounting hole of the remaining ceiling bracket in the same manner.

    • 5

Have a helper raise the garage door opener to the ceiling brackets. Pull out slightly on the brackets to allow the opener to raise high enough, if necessary. Insert the threads protruding from the isolators on each ceiling bracket into the mounting holes on each side of the top of the garage door opener. Place the washers and nuts over the threaded ends of the isolators. Tighten the nuts with a wrench.

Plug the opener power cord back into the outlet. Remove the ladder and test the operation of the door.
