How to Fix Spaces at the Top of French Doors

The space between the top of french doors and the door trim should be even all the way across. The doors should hang level within the frame, and the door knobs and trim should line up perfectly. Temperature changes may cause wooden doors to expand or contract, affecting the alignment slightly. This negligible misalignment is normal, while noticeable changes in the space between the doors and frame or difficulty latching the doors indicates a problem with the hinges and should be addressed before the doors warp and become permanently damaged.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the space at the top of both doors. The gap should be even all the way across. Determine whether one or both doors is hanging too high or low.

    • 2

Examine the hinges of the affected door. Remove any loose screws and measure the diameter of screws. Replace the screws with new ones in the largest possible diameter and 1 inch longer than the old ones.

    • 3

Reexamine the gap at the top of the door. If the gap gets wider further away from the hinge side of the door, loosen the bottom hinge screws two turns or tighten the top hinge screws two turns. If the gap gets narrower further away from the hinge side of the door, loosen the top hinge screws two turns or tighten the bottom hinge screws two turns.

    • 4

Adjust the hinge screws by one or two turns until they are tight enough to secure the door and the gap is even across the top of both doors.

    • 5

Measure the distance from one edge to the other and cut a piece of weatherstripping foam to size with a pair of scissors. Peel the backing off one end of the weatherstripping and adhere it to the edge of the frame opposite and directly above the door.

Peel the backing off slowly and press the foam into the frame until the entire strip rests securely between the door and frame when the door is closed.
