How to Convert Bifold Doors to Standard

Bifold doors are common for linen closets and clothes closets, but they may not be precisely what you want for your home. They can restrict access to odd corners of the closet, and children may get their fingers pinched between the folds of the door. Turn your bifold door into a standard one without taking off the hinges. This results in a light door that gives you full access.

Instructions

  Unscrew the top roller from the wall using a screwdriver, and set it aside. This lets the door fall free from the top of the doorway.

  Open the door fully so you can access the back of the door that faces the closet, and straighten the door so it looks like a standard one.

  Mark the points 4 inches from the top of the door, 4 inches from the bottom of the door and the midpoint between the two using a pencil. Use a measuring tape to ensure that your measurements are precise.

  Hold a mending brace across one of the pencil marks, and screw it into place using screws and an electric drill. The mending brace is a rectangular piece of metal with holes punched at either end and acts like a bridge between the two parts of the bifold door, holding it in place. Put the screws through the holes to hold the brace in place.

  Repeat Step 4 for the other two pencil marks on the door by using the mending braces to hold the door straight. The rigidity of the mending braces prevents the door from folding.
