How to Reset an Uneven Door

Resetting an uneven door remedies problems with drafts or the inability to operate the door easily. If the door is uneven in the frame, this causes the bottom or top section to drag, causing issues with shutting, closing or securing the lock. Gaps in between the uneven door and frame allow cooled or heated air to escape from your home. Drafts may cause a whistling noise and result in higher energy bills as well.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Test the uneven door hinges. Do this by grasping the handle or the door knob once it is open. Lift up on the door knob or handle slightly. Look at the hinges while doing this; if they move, they require tightening.

    • 2

Reinforce the screws by tightening each one with a manual screwdriver. This may be all that is necessary to reset the door properly since repetitive use causes them to loosen.

    • 3

Replace the existing screws that hold the hinges in place. Use new screws that are approximately 2 1/2 to 3 inches long and that have larger shanks -- the diameter of the metal screw -- than the old ones. This is an effective way to reinforce the uneven door. Adding thicker screws pulls the hinge closer to the door jamb and straightens uneven areas. This is also an appropriate method if the existing screws are stripped.

Reinforce the screw hole if the opening is stripped, meaning it doesn't hold the screw securely in place. Do this by inserting a narrow, wood dowel that you have coated with carpenter's or wood glue into the opening. Use a hand saw to remove any of the dowel that is extending out beyond the frame. This provides a sturdy foundation to twist in the screws once the glue dries.

Switch the top hinge with the bottom one if it is bent or straighten it with a pair of wire pliers. The weight of the door causes the leaves on the hinge to bend over time. Another option is to purchase new hinges to replace ones that are worn.
