Removing Trim from Sidelight Glass

Sealant keeps dirt and moisture from entering the cavity between the panes of a sidelight. Over time, the sealant breaks down and dirt builds up between the glass panes. When this happens, the window will become dirty, and no amount of cleaning will return its clarity. Restoring the clean look to the sidelight requires installing a new pane of glass in the sidelight. A fragile trim protects the edges of the glass, and this trim is the key to replacing a dirty sidelight.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the blade of a putty knife flat against the sidelight glass, with its tip sitting at a 45-degree angle to the stop molding.

    • 2

Tap the handle of the puddle knife lightly with a 12-ounce hammer. Continue tapping until the blade slides under the molding and hits the wood of the door. Push the putty knife handle until it touches the front edge of the stop molding. Hit the knife handle repeatedly until you reach the end of the stop molding.

    • 3

Pull the loosened stop molding away from the sidelight glass.

    • 4

Repeat the process to remove the remaining three pieces of stop molding.

    • 5

Scrape along the back of each piece of stop molding to remove old sealant from the face of the trim that sits against the glass.
