Mounting Bi-Fold Doors

There’s a little bit of art as well as science to mounting bi-fold doors. Especially in an older house where the door opening may not be square, you may find yourself following mounting instructions perfectly and still need to gently tweak the positioning of the door’s pivot points to have it swing freely and clear the jambs on each side. You can eventually get the bi-fold door mounted so it hangs well when shut and opens smoothly. For a double installation, repeat the instructions for each side of the opening.

Instructions

    • 1

Using a hacksaw, cut the track that controls the pivots in the top of the door to fit the length of the top of your opening, less one-eighth inch. Screw the track with the provided screws through the holes along the center line of the header at the top of the opening such that the pivot bracket is on the jamb side.

    • 2

Tap the top pivots in the provided holes at the top of the door and the bottom pivot in the bottom with a mallet or small hammer.

    • 3

Mark a spot directly below the hole in the pivot bracket with a marker as determined by dropping a plumb bob and line. Screw the jamb bracket's three provided screws into the holes, making sure its center slot is over your mark. Remove the baseboard if needed so the jamb bracket fits flush to the opening.

Install the door by pushing its top pivot into the pivot bracket and lowering the bottom pivot into the jamb bracket. Snap the snugger guide, which looks like a small box with a spring running through it, into the track. Press down the guide pivot that controls the end of the door toward the center of the opening and release it so it pops into the track.

Step back from the installation to gauge if the door is high enough to be toward the top of the opening, with any gaps toward the floor. To adjust the height, lift the door slightly so the adjusting wheel in the bottom pivot releases from the jamb bracket. Rotate the pivot clockwise to raise the door. Turn the pivot counterclockwise to lower the door if it is snagging as it moves along the track. Drop the pivot back into the jamb bracket.

Double-check whether the door is plumb. If it isn’t parallel to the wall, lift the door, loosen the screw in the top pivot bracket and slide it until the door is plumb. Look to achieve a consistent clearance of a quarter inch between the edge of the bi-fold door and its jamb.
