How to Adjust a Therma-Tru Door With Sidelights

Mistakes made during the installation of a Therma-Tru door with sidelights or continual use of the door can cause adjustment problems between the door, the jamb and the sill. Failure to obtain a proper seal around the edges of the door can allow light and the outdoor air to seep into your home. These minor gaps can also allow your heating and air-conditioning to escape. Realigning the door can close these gaps, keeping the outdoors from finding its way into your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Dollar bill
  • 2-inch masonry or wood screw
  • 2 1/2-inch number three screw
  • Drill
  • 1/8-inch drill bit

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the lock-side of the Therma-Tru door jamb if you can see light coming through the top corner of the door. Loosen the screws holding the jamb in place. Push or pull on the jamb until the space between the front of the door and the outside edge of the jamb weather stripping measures 1 inch at the top, middle and bottom of the door. Tighten the screws to hold the jamb in the new position.

    • 2

Swap the weather stripping on both sides of the door if you have trouble with closing the door and having the door shut firmly. The larger of the two pieces of weather stripping should install on the lock side of the door jamb and the small on the hinge side. Pull the weather stripping from the groove in the jamb and insert the correct strip in the correct side of the jamb. The weather stripping pops into the groove in the jamb.

    • 3

Loosen or tighten the screws in the sill cap along the bottom of the door jamb. This adjusts the sill by raising or lowering it to obtain a snug fit along the bottom of the Therma-Tru door with sidelights. Check for a proper sill fit by closing the door on a dollar bill. The bill should slide from beneath the door with only slight resistance. If the dollar tears, lower the seal slightly.

    • 4

Remove the screws from the sill cap and remove it to level the sill if adjusting the sill does not fix the seal problem along the bottom of the door. Drive a two-inch screw through the middle of the sill and into the subfloor. Replace the sill cap and do the dollar bill test to get a good seal along the bottom of the door.

    • 5

Replace the screws in the hinges to adjust a sagging door. Check the two screws in each hinge closest to the weather stripping to ensure they are 2 1/2-inch number three screws. Replace the screws with the correct screws if they ate installed with shorter screws. Drill 1/8-inch pilot holes through the hinges and into the jamb if necessary. Drive the 2 1/2-inch number three screws through the hinges and into the jamb.

Adjust the tongue on the strike plate if the door is not shutting securely. Loosen the two screws on the strike plate. Adjust the tongue in or out until you get a secure close. Tight the strike plate screws to hold the tongue in the new position.
