How to Repair Aluminum Window Weather Stripping

One of the more durable choices in weather stripping, aluminum V-strips resist wear and are virtually invisible when properly installed. The springy strips create a tight seal on a closed window, which keeps out drafts and frost. They are usually used on double- or single-hung wood frame windows, since they remain most durable when nailed in place. Repair and replacement of the old stripping is only necessary if the aluminum becomes bent or loses its spring.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the tip of a slotted screwdriver beneath the nail heads holding the old weather stripping in place. Lever the nail heads up with the screwdriver until enough of the nail protrudes that you can grasp and pull it out with a hammer claw. Remove all the old nails.

    • 2

Peel the weather stripping from the window frame. Use rubbing alcohol or adhesive remover and a rag to loosen any adhesive holding the strip in place.

    • 3

Wash the window frame with soapy water to remove any dirt or remaining adhesive. Rinse and dry the window frame completely before installing the new aluminum V-strips.

    • 4

Measure the edge of the window. Cut the new aluminum V-strip to match the measurement, using tin snips.

    • 5

Peel the adhesive backing from the aluminum strip. Attach the strip to the window frame with the adhesive, positioning it with the V-channel toward the window and the channel opening facing the outside.

Nail the strip in place, spacing the small tack nails 4 inches apart. Some strips may have nail holes already in place, otherwise the nail easily pierces the strip. Nailing isn't necessary, but extends the life of the weather stripping.
