How to Install Window Insulation Film With Shades

Window insulation film provides a heat transfer barrier to prevent warm air from escaping through your windows and to prevent cold air from entering your home. Installing window insulation can help lower your heating bills, leaving you with more money for other home improvement projects, bills or living expenses. If you have window shades, you can accommodate the shades by installing the insulation film close to the interior surface of the window.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the window shade. Wipe the interior of the window frame clean with a dry, soft cloth. This will help remove dust and debris that can keep insulation film from adhering to the window frame.

    • 2

Measure the height and width of the window frame with a measuring tape. Cut two sections of window insulation tape equal to the width of the frame, and two sections equal to the height, with a utility knife.

    • 3

Peel one side of the backing from one width section and apply it on the top of the interior window frame, about 1/4 inch from the window. Repeat this process for the two height sections, applying them to the sides of the window frame. Press the tape sections tightly against the frame.

    • 4

Peel the backing from the other side of the tape along the top of the window frame. Peel about 12 inches of backing from the other side of the tape on the sides of the frame, starting from the top.

    • 5

Unroll a 12-inch section of window insulation film. Press the edge on the tape along the top of the window frame, and press the insulation on the exposed tape on the sides of the frame. Continue peeling the backing from the sides as you unroll the film until you reach the bottom of the frame.

    • 6

Install the remaining tape section along the bottom frame, about 1/4 inch from the window. Press the window film insulation against this tape section. Trim the excess window film with a utility knife.

    • 7

Shrink the window film with a hair dryer, keeping the dryer at least 3 inches away from the film to prevent damage.
