How to Fix the Roller on the Bottom of Mirrored Closet Doors

When your mirrored bypass closet doors begin to stick or not roll freely, it might be time to fix the rollers on the bottom. The bottom roller assemblies carry most of the weight of each door panel and are more susceptible to damage than the top rollers. Fixing the rollers on the bottom of mirrored closet door requires removing each of the door panels from the opening. Mirrored closet doors are heavier than a traditional wood panel. If necessary, ask a friend to assist you when removing the door panels.

Instructions

Slide the outer door open halfway. Grab the door at the sides and lift it up, compressing the upper roller into the top track. Swing the bottom of the door toward you. Once the bottom rollers clear the lower track, angle the top of the door until the top rollers disengage from the track. Place the door panel flat on the floor.

    • 2

Move the second mirrored door panel toward the center of the opening. Lift up on the door just as you did the first panel. Swing the bottom toward the inside of the closet. Once the bottom rollers clear the lower track, disengage the top rollers and place the panel on the floor.

Check the bottom rollers to determine how they remove from the door panels. Some rollers simply use friction and pry out of the bottom edge of the door panel with a flat-head screwdriver. Other rollers use screws to secure the roller mounting bracket to the inside of the door panel requiring a Phillips screwdriver for removal.

Hold the roller by its mounting bracket and attempt to spin the roller with a finger. Look for slight bends in the mounting bracket that interfere with the roller. Straighten any bends with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

    • 5

Spray the center of the roller near the stem and bearings with graphite. Spin the roller with your finger to distribute the graphite evenly into the roller bearings. If the roller still does not spin freely, purchase replacements that match the existing roller.

    • 6

Install the new roller or reinstall the existing rollers in the reverse order of disassembly. If you have the friction rollers, push them into the bottom edge of the door panel until the body of the roller is flush with the bottom edge of the door panel.

Pick up the inner door panel and set it in the closet opening. Swing the bottom of the panel toward the inside of the closet while angling the top rollers into the upper track. Once the top rollers engage, swing the bottom of the panel back toward the lower track while pushing the panel toward the top. Slowly lower the panel into the lower track and slide the panel to one side of the closet.

Repeat the process for the outer door panel, except you swing the bottom of the panel toward you when reinstalling.
