Repairs for Vertical Cracks on Windows

Tape

• Placing plastic over a vertical window crack keeps air drafts from flowing into the house. A plastic garbage bag taped over the crack with duct tape works as a fast repair. Plastic insulation film helps to cover window cracks; this solution uses a hair dryer to shrink the plastic film to the window for a form fit. Regular plastic wrap and masking tape will seal a crack until a window repair professional arrives.

Window Replacement

• Replacing the whole windowpane is the only permanent way to fix a vertical crack in a window. Temporary repairs only stop the crack from widening; they do not remove the crack or fix it. Calling a professional glass installer to remove the old cracked glass and install a new pane is one method of resolving the issue. Installing the new windowpane yourself is another way to solve the problem and save money on labor costs.
