Visually inspect the springs. Look for signs of wear, stretching or rust. Do not operate the door if you see any of these signs. Replace the springs or call a technician.
Close the steel door, then open it and observe how smoothly it works. Springs that don't have the right tension will not function smoothly. Any jerky or rough motion is a sign that the springs need replacing or the tension adjusted. The door must also close tightly so that the bottom rests on the door's sill and is completely closed. Open and close the door at least twice to make sure it is working efficiently.
Drop test the steel door using the drop release for the fire door. The door should close at a rate of 6 to 24 inches per second, move smoothly and close completely. Open the door again and do another drop test. The door should work just as effectively as before without the springs needing recalibration.
