Larson Energy Star Storm Windows

Older homes can realize increased energy efficiency if their owners install storm windows to combat winter cold. Exterior storm windows alter the look of a house and can also be expensive. Larson Manufacturing Company of Brookings, South Dakota, is a leading manufacturer of aluminum storm windows that can be fitted on the interior of existing windows. Ease of installation, via screws into existing fittings, is one of Larson’s major benefits, allowing do-it-yourselfers to easily complete the job.
  1. Window Types

    • Five different windows are available: two-track double hung, two-track slider hung, two-track sliding/picture window, storm picture window and flush mount window. All frames are manufactured with high-tempered T-6 aluminum with wraparound marine glazing, heavy-duty finger pulls and tilt keys. Prepunched holes allow for easy installation, while ratcheted jambs produce smooth operation. Frames are available in white, almond, brown and sandstone. All windows are custom manufactured and available with low-E glass for greater energy savings. All series are available for exterior or interior installation.

    Bronze Series

    • This is Larson’s basic series. These windows feature expanders that compensate for uneven sills, color-matched installation screws and a limited lifetime warranty. Woolpile weatherstripping adds a thermal barrier and provides protection against air infiltration. Masterframe window sashes remove easily for cleaning or for storage during summer. Basic features are also present on Larson’s Silver and Gold Series windows.

    Silver Series

    • Additional features of Larson’s midgrade, or Silver Series, windows include a stabilizer bar in the center of each frame to add strength and stability, while riv cap miters add strength in the corners. Bow guides make these windows more energy-efficient by preventing them from bowing in heavy winds. Because the Silver Series interlock with existing windows, they have additional strength and integrity. Silver Series windows also meet American Architectural Manufacturers Association certification standards that further ensure quality construction and performance.

    Gold Series

    • Larson’s Gold Series provides the most high-quality features. In addition to the benefits standard with the Bronze and Silver Series, these windows also have double weatherstripping on both sides of each sash to provide maximum protection against air infiltration. Pocketed heads, jambs and sills and interlocking top and bottom sashes provide for an exceptionally tight fit and eliminate the need for stabilizer bars and bow guides present in the Silver Series. Tubular frame design gives these windows additional strength and integrity, while the operating window sash locks in place to provide additional security in the down position. This series is appropriate for three-season rooms and porch enclosures.

    Additional Benefits

    • Manufacturer claims indicate that Larson storm windows can reduce energy loss by up to 50 percent and cut drafts by as much as 48 percent while also reducing exterior noise. Interior frames will not weather and have little maintenance beyond simple dusting and cleaning.
