How to Disassemble a Doorknob That Clamps to the Door

A door in a high traffic area, such as a bedroom or bathroom, can be opened and closed several times a day. This constant use can wear out the mechanism inside the doorknob, causing the door latch to fail to release when you turn the knob, or fail to latch when you shut the door. Replacing the doorknob can stop these issues from occurring. You must disassemble the doorknob to unclamp and remove it from the door.

Instructions

Find the small slot on the throat of the doorknob. It may be on the inside or outside of the door, depending on the manufacturer of the doorknob.

    • 2

Insert a 1/4-inch slotted screwdriver into the slot. Place a slight amount of pressure against the handle of the doorknob with the screwdriver to release the spring clip inside the handle. Pull the handle off the doorknob.

    • 3

Insert the 1/4-inch screwdriver in the small slot on the outside edge of the trim ring. The trim ring covers the interior mechanism, the hole in the wood door and the screws holding the doorknob in the door. Pull the trim ring off the door knob.
