How to Fix Torn Window Strings

Older double-hung sash windows are actuated by means of a weight and pulley system. An integral part of the system is the use of strings, sometimes referred to as sash cords. Because window frames are exposed to weather, dramatic temperature changes can adversely affect the strings. The strings can stretch and, in extreme cases, even break under the weight of the window. Replacement sash cords are available and are fairly straightforward to install.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut through any paint film that exists in the gap between the wall and the window molding with a utility knife.

    • 2

Remove the window molding. Molding is commonly held in place with nails, but screws are sometimes used as an alternative. Pry the molding away from the window opening with a small pry bar using the seam between the wall and the molding as an access point. Remove the screws with a screwdriver if the molding is secured with screws.

    • 3

Pull the lower window sash out of the window opening to access the knotted window strings on the sides of the widow. Pull the knotted ends out of the sides of the window.

    • 4

Remove the two access covers from the interior-side of the window opening to access the window weights. As with the molding, the access covers may be held in place with either nails or screws. Remove the fasteners with the same method used to remove the molding.

    • 5

Pull the weights out of window frame and untie the string from the top of the weights.

    • 6

Tie one end of the new window string to one end of the old window string.

    • 7

Pull the opposite end of the old string out of the wall to feed the new string into the wall cavity.

    • 8

Untie the new string from the end of the old string.

    • 9

Tie one end of the new string to the top of the weight. Tie the opposite end of the string into a knot and press the knot into the recessed cavity within the side of the window. Insert the window weights into the wall cavities.

    • 10

Reattach the two access covers to the interior-side of the window opening.

    • 11

Insert the window into the window frame.

    • 12

Reattach the window molding to the wall.
