Instructions

    • 1

Remove the hinges from the door with a screwdriver. This enables you to lay the door flat on a work surface to repair the splintering with less difficulty.

    • 2

Replace any large splinters that are hanging from the bottom of the door by using wood glue. Let the area dry completely before continuing.

    • 3

Sand the bottom of the door with a medium-grit sandpaper. Use a sanding block or fold the sandpaper in half and then in half again to grip it well during the process. Always swipe the sandpaper against the wood along with the grain. The sanding gets rid of any loose splinters.

    • 4

Dust off the door bottom with a cleaning cloth to remove any residue from the sandpaper.

    • 5

Add wood putty to any empty spaces where large shards of wood broke off due to the splintering. Apply the putty with a flexible putty knife. Wait for the wood putty to dry according to the instructions on the can.

    • 6

Apply a varnish to the repaired area with a small paintbrush. Wait for the varnish to dry completely.

    • 7

Sand the door bottom lightly with a fine-grit sandpaper. This enables the varnish to adhere to the wood well. Add two more coats of the varnish, allowing them to dry, and sanding them in between the coats.

    • 8

Ask someone to help you rehang the door by holding it while you attach it to the hinges with the screwdriver.
