How to Fix an Anchor for a Bi-Fold Door

The anchors for a bi-fold door are actually called the pivot pins. There is one on the top corner of the door, beside the jamb, and another on the bottom door corner. Each of these pins rests in a bracket, which serves to anchor the end of the door while the end of the other door panel slides along the overhead track. Repair the anchors to fix a bi-fold door that is wobbly or that drags.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine both the top and bottom pivot pins, to make certain each one is inserted correctly into its respective bracket.

    • 2

Adjust the top of the door panel to move the top pin into the bracket or lift up on the door and adjust the door bottom so that the bottom pin inserts into the bracket.

    • 3

Lift up on the door and remove the bottom pin from the bracket if the bracket sits too low for the pivot pin to insert completely into the bracket hole or if the door wobbles as you slide it open and shut. Pull down on the top of the door and remove the door from the frame. Place it to the side.

    • 4

Extract the screws that hold the bracket against the door jamb and the floor, using a power drill. Lift the bracket up and install a shim underneath the bracket. Re-install the screws into the bracket, which raises the bracket so that the pivot pin fully inserts into it.

    • 5

Install a small hole saw into the drill if the door wobbles. Pull the bottom pivot pin out of the hole in the bottom edge of the door.

    • 6

Drill into the hole on the door's bottom edge with the hole saw to enlarge the hole.

    • 7

Rub glue onto a wooden dowel plug, a small cylindrical rod, available at hardware or home improvement stores. Place the dowel into the bottom door hole and gently tap it down, using a hammer.

    • 8

Cut off the top of the dowel with a utility knife, if necessary, so that the dowel sits flush with the door edge.

    • 9

Install a drill bit into the drill and drill a hole down into the dowel plug.

    • 10

Position the bi-fold door underneath the overhead track. Adjust the top of the door so that the top pivot pin inserts into the top bracket. Press down on the roller on top of the door and allow it to spring up fully into the track. Adjust the bottom corner of the door so that the bottom pivot pin inserts into the hole in the bottom bracket.
