How to Get the Pulley Off the Garage Track

Attached to the top end of the frame support, the garage door pulley assists in moving the door along a set of metal tracks. Both manual and automatic garage doors employ a cable-and-pulley system that provides a mechanical advantage similar to a block-and-tackle to reduce the effective weight of the door. If a garage door begins operating in a jerky or uneven manner, or won’t move at all, a faulty pulley is often the cause.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the garage door normally if the door pulley is operational. With the door in the fully open position, attach a C-clamp to each roller track directly under the bottom rollers on each side of the door. If the pulley is not operational, place the lip of a high-lift floor jack under the bottom of the garage door. Raise the door with the jack until the bottom of the door is at least 16 inches off the floor. Insert a metal bar, such as a tire iron or crowbar, through the holes in the metal tracks immediately below the bottom rollers attached to the sides of the door. Lower the jack until the rollers at the bottom of the door rest on the bars. For safety, leave the jack in place under the door.

Place a stepladder under the pulley or electric door opener. If the door is equipped with an electric opener, unplug the motor, remove the screws from the opener casing with a Phillips screwdriver, and work the casing off the door opener with your hands.

    • 3

Loosen the pulley spring bracket where the bracket attaches to the top of the door frame support, with a wrench. Do not remove the bracket from the support.

    • 4

Remove the cable mounting clamp from the bottom of the garage door with a wrench. Pull the cable attachment clip from the cable mounting clamp with a pair of pliers.

    • 5

Remove the nut from the garage door pulley axle with a wrench and work the pulley from the bracket with your hand. Insert the new pulley into the mounting bracket. Replace the pulley axle and secure the nut to the pulley axle with the wrench.

    • 6

Reattach the cable attachment clip to the cable mounting clamp at the bottom of the door with pliers. Reattach the cable mounting clamp to the bottom of the door with the wrench.

    • 7

Retighten the pulley spring bracket at the top of the door frame support with the wrench. For doors with electric openers, secure the casing in place with the screws and screwdriver and plug in the opener.

    • 8

Remove the C-clamps or floor jack and metal bars from the door track.
