How to Make Your Own Jamb Liner

A jamb liner is a small strip that is installed in the frame of windows. They are effective in sealing windows, which can significantly reduce energy cost. Jamb liners are made from different types of materials such as vinyl, aluminum or wood. At some point jamb liners can become defective and may need to be replaced. There are various businesses that sell them, but you can make your own at home with a few basic materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the window frame from the inside, starting from one side jam to the other side jam. Take the measurement in three locations: top, middle and bottom. Use the smallest measurement of the three.

    • 2

Take the height of the window frame, starting from the head jamb and down to the inside edge of the window. Measure from the top inside of the window down to the bottom interior of the sill. Measure the left, right and center and use the smallest measurement.

Mark the measurement on a wooden strip, three-eighths to one-half inch thick. Cut the wooden strip with a table saw based on your previous measurements. Apply wood glue to all the end pieces and align them together. Firmly apply pressure to the glued areas to secure them together. Let the glue dry thoroughly for at least 24 to 48 hours to complete the jamb liner.
