How to Take the Cylinder Out of a Door

When you insert the right key into a cylinder lock, the key turns a cylinder, which in turn opens and closes the door latch. Even if you have not had any prior experience with taking out door locks, removing a cylinder is a simple task. Take the cylinder out when you want to replace the lockset, such as when you lose the key, or when the lock is old and worn and you want a new, reliable one.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door partially and stand on the inside of the door.

    • 2

Push the edge of a flat-head screwdriver into the slot on the side of the inside door knob shank. Slide the inside doorknob off. This exposes the cylinder barrel.

    • 3

Install a Phillips driver bit into a power drill. Locate the two screws on the face of the plate at the base of the inside doorknob.

    • 4

Put the power drill in reverse and extract the two screws from the plate. The screws are usually long, so make sure that you unscrew them completely. Pull the knob and plate off the door.

    • 5

Pull the outside doorknob off and, along with it, the attached cylinder. The outside doorknob is not attached by screws and will come off easily.
