Replacement Windows Vs. Replacement Balances

Selecting replacement windows is no small task. When the time comes to purchase replacement windows, you will be faced with terminology, choices and decisions that you need to understand. Replacement windows give you an opportunity to improve the energy efficiency of your home and improve the curb appeal of your home. And replacement balances will give you the opportunity to upgrade the mechanics of your windows to open and close the windows with ease.
  1. Replacement Windows

    • Replacement windows are typically installed to change an entire window assembly. This can include a change in the type of glass, number of glass panes and the mechanism used to raise and lower the window. For example, a homeowner may install replacement windows to convert single pane windows to double pane windows to improve the energy efficiency of a home. Or, the homeowner may convert from windows with wood frames to windows with vinyl frames, or perhaps windows that use a coil system instead of a pulley system to raise and lower the windows.

    Window Balances

    • The window balance is the mechanism that enables your window sash to stay open. The term “window sash” is used to describe the components that you move to open and close the window, which includes the frame that houses the window glass. There are four types of window balances --- square channel, spiral tube, coil, and block and tackle. Square balances use a pulley system to raise and lower the window sash. Spiral tube balances use a spiral rod inside of a spring tube mechanism. Coil balances have a coil spring that creates tension to raise and lower the sash and keep it in place. And block and tackle balances use a pulley to raise and lower the sash and a block to hold the window sash in place.

    Similarities

    • When you install a replacement window, it will include a new window balance unit. The type of glass you install will determine the type of window balance your window assembly will require. For example, if you convert from a single pane window to a double pane window, the replacement window may have coil balances instead of pulleys because you will need a balance mechanism that can support the additional weight of two panes of glass.

    Differences

    • A replacement window means more than a replacement of a broken pane of glass. If you install a replacement window, you can opt to alter all or some of the components that compose the window assembly --- from the type of materials for the frame, such as vinyl or wood, to the type of glass and number of glass panes. Window balances, on the other hand, are only one component of a window assembly, while replacement windows include all of the components of a window assembly. You can change the type of window balance without having to replace the sash components, as long as the window balance is strong enough to support the weight of the glass and the weight of the entire window frame assembly.
