What Is UV Stabilizer in Vinyl Shutters?

When purchasing window coverings for the home or office, you must decide whether vinyl shutters or blinds are the right choice. Among the advantages of vinyl window coverings are resistance to ultraviolet light from the sun. UV light can cause discoloration and deterioration of plastic, vinyl and fabric. Today's vinyl window treatments are UV resistant to better protect the home or office interior.
  1. Vinyl

    • Vinyl is a flexible and durable type of plastic often used for blinds and shutters because of its durability, flexibility and ability to mimic the look of wood. It is also resistant to sun, rot and scratches. Over time, the components of vinyl break down with exposure to ultraviolet light, so to make up for this weakness, manufacturers add several micro-ingredients, including UV stabilizers. Besides UV stabilizers, other added components include heat stabilizers, color pigment and impact resistors.

    Sun Damage

    • The ultraviolet rays from the sun create a chemical reaction within the vinyl. UV light also reacts with other materials, such as PVC, wood and fabric. Known as photo-oxidation, this process breaks down the molecules within the vinyl. This degradation reduces molecular weight, leaving the vinyl discolored and brittle.

    UV Stabilizer

    • A UV stabilizer is a compound added to plastics that prevents deterioration from ultraviolet rays. When added to vinyl during manufacturing, the UV resistance is blended throughout the entire piece, not just added as a coating or glaze. When used in combination with other stabilizers, UV stabilizers stop the chemical reaction of photo-oxidation.

    Considerations

    • The level of UV stabilizer in vinyl blinds will affect the price. When shopping for vinyl blinds, compare the claims of UV resistance with the price. Inexpensive vinyl blinds will not offer the same level of protection as a more quality-priced item. More inexpensive blinds may be a PVC-only or PVC-vinyl blend, which is less resistant to UV light. Look for vinyl blinds that are all vinyl or vinyl-wood blended for the best quality.
