How to Install Interior Glass Inserts on Casement Windows for the Winter

Glass inserts are an effective way to winterize your casement windows. If you have casement windows that need added insulation for winter, you can install glass inserts on them as a do-it-yourself home improvement project. The panel of glass and the void between it and the original window adds insulating value to your windows. These panels are simple to install and can be removed once spring arrives. Glass panels are more reusable, attractive, effective and just as easy if not easier to install than those plastic window sealing kits that are sold as a quick fix to winterize a drafty window.

Instructions

    • 1

Center the glass panel over the interior side of the casement window with the fuzzy strip side against the window frame. Measure and mark the center of each side of the panel with a tape measure and pencil. Make the pencil mark 1/4-inch away from the edges of the panel. Set the glass panel aside.

    • 2

Drill a 1/2-inch-deep hole into the window frame at each pencil mark using a drill equipped with a 1/8-inch drill bit. This is a pilot hole for the half-turn-button screws.

    • 3

Hold a half-turn button over each drilled pilot hole so the mounting hole in it is centered. Drive the screws that were included with the half-turn buttons through the mounting holes into the window casing with a screw gun. Turn the buttons so they are in the open position.

    • 4

Center the glass panel over the interior side of the casement window. The fuzzy insulation strip side should be flush against the window frame. Turn the half-turn buttons so they are in the closed position. In the closed position they hold the glass panel firmly in place against the casement window frame.
