Which Lubrication Is Good for the Aluminum Shutters?

Aluminum shutters provide an economical and functional solution to adding curb appeal to the home. Aluminum shutters are a lightweight and corrosion-resistant way to block out the light and utilize decorative window covers. Shutters are virtually maintenance free but do require some periodic lubrication, usually on a yearly basis.
  1. Parts

    • Aluminum shutters only have a minimum number of movable parts but these need regular lubrication, especially since regular metal-to-metal contact occurs. Aluminum shutters will need to be lubricated on their hinges, which are regularly exposed to the elements. Aluminum shutters that open on tracks also need lubrication. This style usually opens and closes like an accordion and has several points at which the metal connectors move up and down the shutter track.

    Silicone

    • Silicone is one of the better lubricants you can use for aluminum shutters. Silicone increase the ease of movement of moving parts on the shutters, while at the same time providing a corrosion protection covering for the metal parts. Silicone lubricant is usually available at retail home improvement stores, hardware stores or through the shutter manufacturer.

    Lithium Grease

    • Lithium grease also provides homeowners with a viable alternative form of lubrication for their shutters. It also provides for ease of movement but does not necessarily provide for the same level of protection from moisture that silicone lubricants do. Another drawback to lithium grease is that it tends to be messier and more difficult to clean up.

    Others

    • If you are obtain any silicone lubricant or lithium grease, you can always rely upon a household three-in-one lubricant that is used for a variety of household lubricant applications. These oils are available nearly anywhere, including major retail chain department and grocery stores. Graphite lubricant is also used for some shutter systems and provides a fourth alternative. In addition to lubricating, keep your shutter tracks regularly clean. Clean debris with a vacuum or with a lightly dampened washcloth.
