How to Cure Putty on a Glass Casement Window

You can find casement windows in old and new homes. Casement windows have large frames that surround the glass. The windows open out like a hinged door, or the glass portion opens and lays horizontally. Using window putty will help to prevent leaks and seal the frame into place. The putty must cure against the frame but once it does, the putty should last years.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any dust or debris along the window’s frame using a moist cloth or a vacuum cleaner.

    • 2

Follow the preparation instructions on the window putty. Depending on the brand, it may be ready to use or you may need to add water.

    • 3

Roll the putty between your hands to make long rolls the width and length of the channels surrounding your window’s frame. Don't worry if it is too thick; you will be able to trim it down once it is on the frame.

    • 4

Line the putty rolls along the frame and push it into the channels. Smooth out the putty with a putty knife.

    • 5

Use a razor blade to trim off the extra putty so it fits evenly along the frame.

    • 6

Allow the putty to cure for at least 24 hours.
