Problems With Old Style Andersen Pressure Seal Windows

Over time and with normal use, even better brand windows, such as those made by Andersen, can fail. When an old style, double-hung Andersen Pressure Seal window wears out, it may not function properly and let in air and moisture from the outdoors, which ultimately reduces its energy efficiency. Rather than attempt to repair an old Andersen window, it may be more cost-effective to replace it altogether.
  1. Weakened Seal

    • Although old style Andersen Pressure Seal windows were designed with an air-tight, moisture-resistant seal, this seal can weaken between the sash and frame with age. If this occurs, you may see condensation on the glass. Additionally, you may feel a cool draft coming through the edges of the frame where it meets the sash. While you may be able to have the seal repaired or replaced, depending on the age of the window, it may be best to have the entire window replaced. Once air and moisture breach the seal, they can enter the window’s wood frame and cause deterioration, which can lead to more window repair costs down the road.

    Loose Glass

    • The glass can come loose from the frame of an old style Andersen Pressure Seal window. If this occurs, air and moisture can penetrate the window and leak into your home. Andersen recommends having the loose glass re-glazed to remedy this problem.

    Difficult Opening and Closing

    • If more effort is required to open and close your old style Andersen Pressure Seal window, it’s mostly likely because the window sash is dirty and dry. Since this type of window glides on window tracks as it opens and closes, you need to routinely clean the tracks and sash; otherwise, debris can settle in these areas and make the window harder to open and close. Use a bristle brush to loosen debris then wipe the tracks and the sash with a damp cloth. Additionally, you can apply a light oil or silicone spray to the hardware.

Doesn't Shut Properly or Stay Open

    • In general, operational problems with your old style Andersen Pressure Seal windows are related to a hardware malfunction. The window’s hardware is especially susceptible to breakage with repeated use. Often you can repair the window by replacing the hardware, according to Andersen. Yet from time to time a warped window frame or sash is the source of the problem. The frame or sash can become misshaped due to your house settling. If this is the case, you will need to have a window repair technician take out the affected window and re-frame so it's square.
