How to Adjust a Binding Folding Door

Adjust the top or bottom pivot to fix a binding folding door. The door is usually out of alignment in the door frame. Look at the edge of the door and the frame; they should be parallel. If not, the door binds. The top pivot is often responsible for binding. When it's loose, the door can slip out of alignment. Look for a worn edge on the bottom of the door and for marks along the bottom of the frame. When the door binds along the lower portion of the door, adjusting the bottom pivot may fix the problem.

Instructions

  1. Top Pivot

    • 1

Loosen the screw in the bracket.

    • 2

Grip the door edge. Move the bracket back and forth until the door is aligned with the frame.

    • 3

Move the door open and close to ensure it closes without binding. If it still binds, adjust the pivot again.

    • 4

      Tighten the screw.

    Bottom Pivot

    • 5

Lift the door up until the pivot comes out of the bracket.

    • 6

Hold the door bottom. Twist the pivot to raise or lower the door until it is level.

    • 7

Lower the pivot into the bracket. Release the door.

    • 8

Stand back and examine the door. If it does not appear level and is still binding, adjust the pivot again.
