How to Tighten a Window Shade

A standard window shade consists of a length of covering, usually plastic, wound around a roller. Inside the roller are the mechanisms -- a ratchet, a pin and a coil spring -- that allow you to pull the shade to any desired length and have it remain in that position. Sometimes the tension in the mechanism becomes loose, causing the shade to unroll on its own. When this happens, the shade's tension needs to be adjusted.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the bottom of the shade and pull it halfway down from the roller.

    • 2

Snap the window shade out of the window brackets.

    • 3

Wind the shade tightly back around the roller with your hands.

    • 4

Return the shade to the brackets. If the shade is still too loose, repeat the steps until you are satisfied with the tension.
