How to Fix a Deadbolt Lock Latch

A deadbolt lock latch is the bolt assembly that fits into the door edge, including the exterior edge trim. If proper maintenance is not performed regularly, lubrication within the lock evaporates. As a result, the latch will not engage when the thumb turn or key is used. You may be able to repair and lubricate the latch, returning it to working order. If the damage is extensive, the latch may need to be replaced. Replacing the latch doesn't require replacing the entire lock system.

Spray the lock assembly and keyhole with silicone-based lubricant. Wipe any excess lubricant from around the trim with a dry rag.

    • 6

Repeat the disassembly process if the latch still doesn't operate properly.

    • 7
